Kilimanjaro Marangu Route 7 Days Details
6 Days Marangu Route
Route Description
Marangu Route is one of oldest routes on Mount Kilimanjaro and it used to be the most popular one. It is also considered the easiest climb, because of the gradual slope, at least until the final approach to the summit. There are two distinguishing features of this route. It is the only route where climbers sleep in cabins with bunk beds instead of tents with air mattresses. It is also the only route which uses the same ascent and descent trail. Marangu Route is sometimes nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route.” The origin of that nickname is murky: if we’re honest, you’ll find as many stories about it as there are tour operators on Kili! We like to think it’s because, back in the day, before modern high-quality trekking equipment was widely available, Marangu Route was the only route that offered the relative comfort of the sleeping huts. Being the easiest climb, it was seen as the most “touristy” route. Trekkers could even purchase soft drinks, snacks, and even beer at the ranger stations. Sadly (or fortunately!), that’s no longer the case. Due to more routes having been developed on Kili, you’ll now find that Marangu Route has been surpassed in popularity. Marangu Route is also the only route where free wifi is provided by the National Park at all the campsites.
Itinerary (6 Days)
Marangu Route is commonly done with a 6-day itinerary, however a 5-day itinerary is possible. Below we present the 6-day itinerary, and indicate where it can be shortened to 5 days.
For each day we provide an estimate of the time spent trekking, however these times are only approximate and highly variable, depending on the weather conditions and the pace that your group is able to maintain.
Pre-departure (Same for all routes)
Most climbers arrive in Tanzania via Kilimanjaro International Airport. We recommend arriving at least one day before your trek begins. At the airport, you will be warmly welcomed by one of Rafiki’s representatives and we will transport you to your dedicated hotel in either Moshi or Arusha. In the late afternoon or evening on the day before your trek, we will host a briefing at the hotel where you will meet your mountain guide and you will receive any final details about your upcoming trip. We will be pleased to answer any remaining questions you may have. Our staff will also be happy to check over your gear, and at this time we will also assist you with rental of any personal equipment you may need. If your trip is a joining trek, you will also have a chance for introduction with the other climbers who are joining together with your group.
Day 1 – Hotel to Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut
We will meet you at your hotel in Moshi or Arusha in the morning, and after breakfast, there will be a final gear check before loading up into our vehicles. It’s a high-quality tarmacked road all the way to Marangu Gate, and on the way there, if the sky is clear, you’ll have a good view of the summit. After signing into Kilimanjaro National Park, you’ll begin your hike through the rainforest, where hopefully you’ll see black-and-white colobus monkeys, blue monkeys, and be serenaded by the birdsong. It’s a gentle climb to Mandara Hut where you will stay overnight in the sleeping huts.
- Start point Marangu Gate elevation 1879 m (6165 ft)
- End point Mandara Hut elevation 2720 m (8924 ft)
- Elevation gain 841 m (2759 ft)
- Distance covered 8 km (5 miles)
- Trekking duration (approximately) 3 to 4 hours
- Climatic zones Montane Forest
Day 2 – Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut
Today will be a longer day, with the trail starting in the forest and quickly bringing you higher into the Moorland zone. The hike is a gentle but steady climb on a wide and even path with some rocky sections.
- Start point Mandara Hut elevation 2720 m (8924 ft)
- End point Horombo Hut elevation 3720 m (12,205 ft)
- Elevation gain 1000 m (3281 ft)
- Distance covered 11 km (7 miles)
- Trekking duration (approximately) 4 to 5 hours
- Climatic zones Montane Forest and Moorland
Day 3 -Horombo Hut to Horombo Hut
Day 3 is an acclimatization hike to expose your body to higher altitudes, preparing your body for the final hike to the base camp. The climb up to Zebra Rock is slow and steady. The volcanic rock takes its namesake from its natural black and white colouring. You will then descend back down to Horombo Hut to spend a second evening there.
- Start point Horombo Hut elevation 3720 m (12,205 ft)
- Highest point reached Zebra Rock elevation 4020 m (13,189 ft)
- End point Horombo Hut elevation 3720 m (12,205 ft)

- Distance covered 2 km (1 mile)
- Trekking duration (approximately) 1 hour

***If you choose to do the 5-day option, there will be no acclimatization hike on Day 3 and instead proceed you will proceed directly to Kibo Hut as described below.***
Day 4 – Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut
The first part of the route to Kibo Hut continues to be a gentle incline with some rocky sections. You will then reach a long and wide saddle, which you need to cross to reach Kibo Hut. Crossing it sometimes evokes the feeling of a lunar desert, with crosswinds and a barren landscape. The trail looks deceptively flat, but in fact it has a steady incline. Kibo Hut is your base camp for your summit attempt, and you’ll arrive with time to sleep during the afternoon and evening in preparation for your summit.
- Start point Horombo Hut elevation 3720 m (12,205 ft)
- End point Kibo Hut elevation 4720 m (15,486 ft)
- Elevation gain 1000 m (3281 ft)
- Distance covered 9 km (6 miles)
- Trekking duration (approximately) 5 to 6 hours
- Climatic zones Alpine Desert
Day 5 – Summit Day! Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak and back to Horombo Hut
Now you’ve reached the final stage of your journey to the highest point in Africa. Kibo Hut is where Marangu Route converges with Rongai Route. You will depart from Kibo Hut at around midnight early on Day 5, and the trail will be a gradual climb at the start. The trail becomes steeper as you approach Gilman’s Point (elevation 5685 m / 18,652 ft), and it makes use of constant switchbacks to allow for a manageable yet challenging climb, which will require great physical and mental stamina. From Gilman’s Point to Stella Point (5756 m / 18,885, the trail follows along the crater rim, and although it is not so steep anymore, it is rocky and icy so you need to be careful and listen to your guide. At Stella Point, you’ll meet with the climbers from the other routes and then you are only about a hundred vertical metres until the summit at Uhuru Peak. Congratulations! You have now made it to the “Roof of Africa”. Weather conditions on the summit will determine how long you will be able to spend there, but it is important to start your descent within good time to ensure you get enough rest back at Kibo Hut. After your rest, you’ll begin your descent to Horombo Hut where you’ll spend your last night on the mountain and have a well-deserved sleep.
