Mount Kilimanjaro
BEST TIME TO CLIMB KILIMANJARO
Kilimanjaro is a mountain that experiences two seasons, dry and rainy. The best time to climb Kilimanjaro is during the dry season, which occurs from December to mid-March and from mid-June to the end of October. During these months, the weather conditions are ideal, with clear skies, great views, little-to-no rain, and sunshine. However, it’s important to note that weather can change dramatically, regardless of the season.
It’s possible to climb Kilimanjaro at any time of the year, but certain months are better than others. It’s recommended to avoid April and November, which are the main rainy seasons, as the trails can become more dangerous.
January through early March and June through October are considered the best months to climb Kilimanjaro. These months offer ideal trekking conditions, primarily dry, clear days and good visibility. Occasional showers and a good chance of snow over 14,000 feet make epic photo opportunities.
March, April, and May are considered shoulder seasons. Early March is lovely, but as the month progresses, the rains can start to set in, making for muddy trails, cloudy skies, and poor visibility. April to early May are the long rains and not suitable for climbing. Late March and May are a bit hit or miss, with occasional dry weather but still a chance of rain. It’s essential to be prepared for wet weather and not be disappointed by poor visibility during these months.
The primary climbing season is from June to September, the busiest time on the mountain, combining the best weather and the US and European summer vacations. July and August are the most popular months, so if you want to avoid crowds, opt for June, September, or October if you don’t mind a bit of rain. Occasional showers are always possible, particularly in the forest, but it’s a predominantly dry time of year.
November is considered a shoulder season due to the short rains that usually come during this month and last 3-4 weeks. The rain is less persistent than in April-May (the “long rains”) and mostly comes in the late afternoon. The mountain is tranquil during this time. We would recommend the Rongai or Northern circuit route as the mountain’s northern side is more sheltered and has less overall rainfall.
Overall, it’s essential to consider the weather conditions when planning a Kilimanjaro climb. January through early March and June through October are the best months to climb Kilimanjaro, offering clear skies, great views, and comfortable hiking conditions.
