6‑Day Marangu Route – Mount Kilimanjaro

Overview

The Marangu Route, often referred to as the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most established and accessible paths to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro. It is the only route that offers hut accommodation instead of camping, making it a comfortable option for climbers.

This six-day itinerary includes an acclimatization day, improving your chances of reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 meters.

Itinerary

Day 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut

Begin at Marangu Gate after registration and briefing. Trek through dense rainforest with chances to see colobus monkeys and birdlife.

  • Hiking Time: 4–5 hours
  • Distance: ~8 km
  • Altitude: 1,870 m to 2,700 m

Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner


Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut

Continue into the moorland zone with wide views of the mountain.

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: ~12 km
  • Altitude: 2,700 m to 3,720 m

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner


Day 3: Acclimatization Day at Horombo Hut

Take a short hike toward Mawenzi Ridge or Zebra Rocks and return to Horombo Hut to aid acclimatization.

  • Optional Hike: 2–4 hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner


Day 4: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut

Trek through alpine desert terrain to Kibo Hut, preparing for summit night.

  • Hiking Time: 5–6 hours
  • Distance: ~10 km
  • Altitude: 3,720 m to 4,700 m

Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner


Day 5: Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut

Begin your summit attempt at midnight. Reach Uhuru Peak, then descend to Horombo Hut.

  • Hiking Time: 10–14 hours
  • Altitude: 4,700 m to 5,895 m to 3,720 m

Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner


Day 6: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate

Descend back through moorland and rainforest to Marangu Gate. Receive your summit certificate.

  • Hiking Time: 5–7 hours

Meals: Breakfast, Lunch
